Mamma Mia! Detroit Theatre reviews
Really enjoyable evening
We had a wonderful time seeing this latest production of Mamma Mia. It was very good, but not great. The venue at the Civic Theater was really limiting as far as staging--everything was amazingly claustrophobic or constrained at times. There were some really excellent performances, but somehow it lacked a bit of life. To be fair, we did have 2 understudies in the roles of Sophie and Sam. The man who played Sam was particularly weak at our performance--he was too young (looked more like Sophie's age) and his voice was a bit grating. However, they both did their best and belt out the songs as required. We had friends with us who were seeing Mamma Mia for the first time. They loved it and other than the age thing with Sam, didn't seem to be bothered at all by some of the lackluster performances.
